During his stay in the Netherlands, De Smet regularly portrayed the people around him, such as farmers, fishermen and neighbourhood children. ![]() The impressionistic atmosphere of his prewar work was replaced by a strong and schematic composition and the use of more vivid colours. This 'Child's Head' is an early example of Gustave De Smet’s evolution towards Expressionism. ![]()
